Molasses, corn syrup and beet juice isn't your normal marinade, but it just may be what the snow gods ordered to treat icy U.S. highways during this blustery, blizzardy winter.
According to an article in The Wall Street Journal yesterday, many cities are shying away from the tried-and-true rock salt which "speeds up the corrosion of bridges and cars, chokes vegetation and isn't very effective below 17 degrees Fahrenheit," and letting some pretty weird liquid combos do the job instead.
Akron, Ohio is testing Geo-Melt, a gooey product derived from sugar beets and salt brine. Denver tried a product that looked like maple syrup and smelled "like nasty alcohol." And it seems to be "happy hour" 24/7 on the New Jersey Turnpike where the liquid anti-icing agent in use contains residue from rum distillation.
