Honestly, I’d love Procacci even without chef Lorenzo DiMartino’s Risotto with Montenisa Brut. (Please see below for my post on the best risotto this side of the Arno.)
This restaurant, the offspring of a fine foods emporium of the same name that has served Florence since 1885, is located in the heart of Vienna. Though the building on Göttweihergasse (a gasse is a narrow alleyway) is hundreds of years old, the interior is sleek and stylish, with two dining rooms and a spacious bar that is packed nightly with an enthusiastic, great-looking crowd of all ages. A dramatic refectory, which served as a dining hall for Benedictine monks in an earlier century, is on the lower level.
In addition to the stunning Risotto con Montenisa Brut e Parmigiano, the menu includes many dishes that
I simple cannot resist:
*** Fresh burrata cheese with San Marzano tomatoes and fresh basil
*** Sauteed goose liver with celery and fig cream sauce
*** Grilled beef with arugula and a potato-pumpkin ragout
*** Homemade ravioli with prosciutto, buffala ricotta and tomatoes
*** Lemon tart with homemade caramel gelato
Prices range from 8 Euros (about $10 at today's exchange rate) for a terrific arugula salad with crispy pancetta and caramelized onions to about 25 EU for a well-garnished entree.
Service at Procacci is sophisticated and professional, yet warm and hospitable. Dinner is served until midnight (with bar service until 1 A.M.) every night but Sunday.
