Hot dogs topped with cheese, pineapple, mustard, crumbled potato chips and thousand island dressing?
Wow. And I thought the “curry wurst" I ate and wrote about In Berlin last summer was wild and crazy.
Yesterday’s short in The New York Times by Jennifer 8. Lee shed a whole new light on the ethnic pup. Specifically the ethnic pups to be found on the streets of New York.
In addition to the cheese-and-pineapple wonder (which hails from Colombia, by the way), Lee writes
about the Korean dog (slathered with bulgogi which is basically soy-barbecued beef and pictured here); the Mexican dog
(with guacamole and chilies); and the perro caliente con salchicha at Cositas Ricas (considered the IHOP
of the Latino Jackson Heights neighborhood). This multi-cultural breed involves Parmesan cheese, potatoes, cheese, mayo, crumbled potato chips and pineapple “sauce.”
For decades the Chicago dog, with its colorful tossed salad of tomato, pickle, onion and hot peppers, was considered the audacious, flamboyant version of the beloved all-American icon. But the melting pot continues to bubble....and we food lovers are richer for it.
